Are there any more Nick Drake songs in the vaults? If so, any plans to release them?

WE ASKED NICK'S PRODUCER and curator, Joe Boyd. And his reply was: "Tricky question."
In fact, there is a bootleg currently circulating, Tamworth In Arden, that features 18 tracks
Nick recorded at home in 1967. The recording is poor quality but includes fascinating
performances of some traditional songs, a version of Bob Dylan's Don't Think Twice, the
Youngblood's Get Together and Gershwin's Summertime, plus 11 early Drake compositions: Don't Be
Afraid To Lie, Down The Highway, Sunday Baby, Water Is Gone, Here Comes The Blues, She Could
Sleep In My Bed Once Again, Season Of The Rain, True Song, The Reason Of The Season, To The
Garden and All My Trials, the latter including vocals by Drake's sister Gabrielle (the bootleg
teasingly, but erroneously, implies this might be Sandy Denny).
Boyd says Drake never played him any of these home demos when they began work on Five Leaves
Left, Nick's debut album. "I first heard them on the bootleg. Nick was his own severest editor.
The only unreleased songs he tried recording are the ones we put on Time Of No Reply, such as
Clothes Of Sand and I Was Made To Love Magic. We put those out because they were all songs that
Nick decided at some point that he wanted people to hear. But he never considered any of those
very early songs."
Boyd is unaware of any other recordings. The original demo that Drake brought him was lost
long ago and he has no knowledge of any much-rumoured live material. Whether any of the Tamworth
demos will ever be available officially is open to speculation. "Everything releasable has been
released," asserts Joe. "The family is very upset about the bootleg. It's important to everybody
involved that what comes out under Nick's name is up to the same standard as the released
material."
John: The songs mentioned are not Drake originals, just mis-titled cover versions. Since then,
a tape of Nick messing about in Aix has surfaced and apparently the quality is pretty good. I
don't think we'll get to hear it though because the family has such a tight rein on his stuff.

All the previously released tracks are the same as the normal CD album
versions apart from I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (extra harmonica note
at the end) and Just Like A Woman (not the premature fade out) as
far as I can tell from the albums I have.
Then, Columbia re-issued it in a small box format, with the original single
version of Mixed-Up Confusion, as opposed to a random mix also claiming
to be the single version that was on the original release. There were other
changes:
Record Collector 219 - November 1997 p. 4:
Early copies of the repackaged Bob Dylan "Biograph" box set crept out in the
States with two unfortunate mistakes, thus ensuring instant collectability for
the first pressing. The main hiccup was inadvertently replacing the Belfast '66
live version of "I Don't Believe You" with a completely different one taped in
Manchester on that same tour (itself often erroneously credited to the infamous
Royal Albert Hall show). Less welcome, though, was losing the first 21 seconds
from the intrto to "Baby Let Me Follow You Down". "The mix-up over the live track
came about because Bob Irwin had researched better quality masters," says Sony
Legacy's European product manager Tim Fraser-Harding. "The second error was simply
down to a technical hitch." Meanwhile, another notable discrepancy has been
spotted on the first pressing: "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight", from Bob's "John
Wesley Harding" album, lasts a full five seconds longer, though this is being
altered for subsequent editions.
