Recording date information is as accurate as possible. It is drawn from the Hitsville Studio
session logs, the purpose of which was to coordinate studio bookings only. Outside recordings
were not included. Also, overdub dates were not always noted. Session logs were started in June
1961, becoming more accurate in February 1962, and were discontinued in June 1974. Recording
sessions prior to October 1966 were held at Hitsville Studios on 2648 West Grand Blvd. in
Detroit. In September 1966, Motown purchased the Golden World label family, which also included
the Golden World Studios at 3246 Davison West in Detroit. Sessions held at Golden World Studios,
which were principally string sessions, have the prefix GW. Beginning in early 1970 sessions at
Hitsville Studios have the prefix A and sessions at Golden World Studios have the prefix B.
Recording date information is drawn primarily from the Hitsville Studio session logs, the
purpose of which was to coordinate studio bookings only. Outside recordings and live remote
recordings were not included. The logs were started in June 1961 and discontinued in June 1974;
there are no Marvin Gaye sessions listed after January 1973. The earliest dates reflect a
completed "live" session - music track and vocals recorded at the same time. After 1964, the
first listed recording date is the track date, usually (but not strictly) followed by the
vocal, background vocal, string and horn dates. Recording dates after early 1973 are less
exact, and, with some exceptions, are omitted. Some recording dates have been pulled from the
legends and track sheets of multi-track master tapes and from the song file cards in the tape
library. In instances where recording dates are given, especially after 1973, the information
is provided here. Typically, though, album sessions took place a few months before release.
