1 "Pennyroyal Tea"
This Remix by Scott Litt was scheduled as the A-Side of what would have been the band's last
single. It was scheduled for release in early April '94 to tie in with the British leg of the
European Tour. When the tour collapsed (and the band split) it was delayed and eventually
scrapped. The remix allows you to hear Kurt's amazing backing vocal take to the full, listen
with your headphones on for maximum pleasure. The B-Side to this single was "Where Did You Sleep
Last Night" from the MTV Unplugged broadcast, which is now commercially available, again mixed
by Scott Litt. "Pennyroyal Tea" is taken from the Digital Mastertape.
"I think there are a few songs on 'In Utero' that could have been cleared up a little bit more.
Definitely 'Pennyroyal Tea'. That was not recorded right. There is something wrong with that.
That should have been recorded like 'Nevermind', because I know that's a strong song, a hit
single. We're toying with the idea of re-recording or remixing it."
(Kurt Cobain,.Chicago,IL,25th,October,1993)
2 "Spank Thru"
The "Love Buzz" sessions took place at the Reciprocal Studios, Seattle, WA on the 11th of June,
1988. Four tracks received a final finished mix that day. A cover version of Shocking Blue's
"Love Buzz", along with three Cobain originals, "Big Cheese", "Blandest" and "Spank Thru". "Love
Buzz" and "Big Cheese" both made the first Sub Pop single (SP23), "Blandest", originally down as
the b-side, appears on "The Final Solution - Outcesticide III" (BMCD39), whilst the fourth and
final track is in your hands right now. Again taken from the Digital Mastertape.
3 "Territorial Pissings"
Recorded from the "live On The Air" Jonathon Ross TV show in England, Nirvana were the musical
guests on this popular chat show on the 6th of December, 1991. Originally they were scheduled to
play "Lithium", but unbeknowst to the producers the band had opted to do a blistering version of
"Territorial Pissings" and caught everyone by surprise. A classic moment in Live TV, pure punk
rock heaven! Taken from the Stereo broadcast Mastertape.
4 "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Recorded live in the studio for the UK TV show "Top of The Pops". The show's producers wouldn't
allow the band to play live, and asked them to lip-synch instead. The band refused point blank.
A compromise was reached and Nirvana performed to a musicians union-approved remixed backing
track, but with Kurt's vocals being broadcast live. As soon as the backing track kicked in (the
show was being broadcast "live on air") Kurt was possessed by the spirit of Jim Morrison and
launched into a most bizarre gothic vocal version of the song. Towards the end of the song the
stage was invaded by fans from the audience and the group disapeared under a sea of long hair
and ripped denim. Another unforgetable TV experience. Taken from the Stereo broadcast
mastertape.
5 "Rape Me"
Written during the final mixing sesions of the "Nevermind" album, this song was debuted at
selected dates on the "Nevermind" tour of Europe during the winter of 1991. The song structure
and lyrics varied from show to show. This early take was recorded at the Castle Theatre, Rome,
Italy on the 19th of November, 1991 and was broadcast on Italian MTV.
6 "Pay To Play"
This is a rare live version of the song that would become "Stay Away" on the "Nevermind" album.
The enthusiasm with which Kurt attacks this new song makes for a stunning live take. Recorded
live from the mixing desk at Duffys Bar, Lincoln, Nebraska on the 14th of May,1990, one of the
last shows to feature Chad Channing on drums.
7 "Scoff"
8 "Love Buzz"
9 "Floyd The Barber"
This three track tape is a professional digital mixing desk recording of the band live in
October,1989. Allegedley short listed for use as live b-sides for either Sub Pop in America or
Tupelo in Europe, the exact date and venue remains unknown as the complete tape has yet to make
it into collectors circles. The October date means it either comes from American dates early in
the month or the European tour that started on the 23rd of October.
10 "Here She Comes Now"
A rare, blistering punk rock electric version of the old Velvet Underground classic. Later the
band took a more dignified acoustic approach to it, but here, at Duffys Bar, Lincoln, Nebraska
on the 14th of May,1990 they nearly blew the PA system apart. Recorded in overload stereo from
the mixing desk.
11 "D.7"
A rare live version of the Wipers classic. Nirvana played this live on the October, 1990
European tour, but this version is taken from the 1992 festival tour dates where they
resurrected it to fill out the set rather than debut too many new, unfinished songs destined for
the "In Utero" album. This version was recorded from the soundboard at the Reading Festival in
England on the 30th of August,1992.
12 "Drain You"
The first demo version recorded at their rehearsal space in Seattle during August of 1990.
Again, like most early versions of Cobain songs, this features alternate lyrics to the finished
version, which was polished up during the final days of the "Nevermind" sessions. Chris
introduces the song in his best "Elephant Man" voice, cueing hysterics from the rest of the
band, sounds like plenty of beers had been sunk at this session.
13 "About A Girl"
Another early demo from Kurt of a song written for his, then, girlfriend Tracy Marander. "Why
don't you write a song about me?", she asked. So he did. And this is it in its first incarnation
with its original lyrics recorded during the summer of 1988 in Seattle.
14 "Lithium"
More alternate lyrics feature during this early stab at the "Nevermind" classic. Recorded at the
band's rehersal space during March,1990 it features Chad Channing on drums. Recorded, like all
the rehersal demos, on Kurts beat up boombox, most tapes were lost, recorded over or given away.
15 "Blew"
An early demo, again with different lyrics to the released version on the "Bleach" album.
Recorded in Seattle in early November, 1988. The backing track is right, but the lyrics go
through one more change before being taken into the studio for the "Bleach" sessions which begin
next month.
16 "All Apologies"
This is possibly the first ever live performance of this song which was written during the 1991
"Nevermind" tour. Played as an encore at the Newcastle Mayfair in England on the 2nd of December
1991, it features totally different lyrics to the final released version that appeared on the
"In Utero" album in 1993.
17 "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter / My Sharona"
The opening song and a blistering sonic attack takes place on the seventh show of the ill fated
1994 European tour. Recorded in digital stereo at the Salles Omnisports in Rennes, France on the
16th of February, 1994, this "In Utero" classic runs straight into a "one time only" take of The
Knack's powerpop hit "My Sharona"! A rare event indeed.
18 "Sappy" (aka: "Verse Chorus Verse")
Again recorded in Rennes, France on the 16th of February,1994, this is a rare live version
performed on only a couple of occasions on the final European tour. This is the classic Nirvana
"single that never was". It was recorded at all three studios album sessions throughout the
years, but never given the release it deserved. In my opinion, one of the best songs Kurt ever
wrote.
19 "Bambi Slaughter" (aka: "Bambi Kill")
A variant of one of Kurt's first songs from the Fecal Matter days in 1986. The version on the
Fecal Matter tape borders on thrash metal. This, however, is a late acoustic home demo done by
Kurt in the fall of 1986. Around the same time he also laid down the recordings of "Misery Loves
Company" and "Sappy" that appear on "Outcesticide 1" (BMCD14). Hey kids, dig those cardboard box
drums!
20 "Clean Up Before She Comes"
Kurt's original four track demo of an unreleased song recorded in Seattle, circa 1987.
Unfortunately the double tracked vocal made it impossible to play live, and so another Cobain
original was left to gather dust on the shelf.
"Then theres a song called 'Clean Up Before She Comes', which is classic, formula Nirvana"
(Courtney Love. Buffalo, New York,12th of October,1994).
21 "Black & White Blues"
Kurt's obsession with his hero Leadbelly shows through in this instrumental home demo recorded
in Seattle circa 1989. You could just imagine Laurel and Hardy dancing around to this one!
22 "Montage of Heck Pt 1"
Professor Kurt spends his spare time editing pieces of his bizarre record collection together to
make a soundtrack from hell. Put together on his old four-track throughout the spring of 1988,
it includes, in amongst the debris, part of the original intro that was used on the Sub Pop 7"
version of "Love Buzz", also a snippet of a Nirvana rehersal tape featuring Chris singing the
unreleased (with good reason) "The Landlord Is A Piece of Shit From Hell".
23 "Montage of Heck Pt 2"
More madness from Kurt's front room, some of which ended up being taken into the studio and
cleaned up for use, though now used, during the "Bleach" sessions. Again, more gooning from Kurt
and his crazy cut-ups in the Spring of 1988.
"Outcesticide IV - Rape of The Vaults" was a "Last Minute" production for Blue Moon Records.
Please note that a rogue "Outcesticide IV" CD is in circulation on a fake Blue Moon label (one
of many), the matrix number is BMCD-50. This is a fake of no value to either collector or
dealer.
Once again our thoughts and prayers go out to KDC, the Clovester and the Bean, the Sweets and
the Foos. May your respective gods watch over you.
Blue Moon Records, Spring, 1996.

21) My Best Friend's Girl (2:24)
[Recorded at the band's last ever gig at Terminal Einz, Munich, Germany on the 1st March

the demise of Nirvana, yet nobody saw fit to mention that this was played at what was to be
their final show.]
22) Autopilot (5:07)
[A one-off live version of what was to be the last song Nirvana ever recorded in a studio

MTV Unplugged special on St. Valentine's Day in 1995.]
The genuine "Outcesticide" series will contiue if, and when, unreleased and interesting material
by Nirvana comes to light. Thank you for your patience, we hope it was worth the wait.

13>21 (28:19) - Live at the Astoria Theatre, London, England on 3rd? December
1989. On the last date of the European tour, Nirvana returned to the U.K. to
play Sub Pop's "Lamefest". Possibly a relatively short set because they were
only support for fellow labelmates Tad and Mudhoney. "At the end of the
Nirvana set, Kurt hurled his guitar at Krist in a gesture of sufferance.
That was the fourth guitar to be smashed or damaged during the set." Craig
Montgomery made this sound board cassette recording. [Dean: p.26/Muddy]
15&18 - legally released on Muddy Banks but in a slightly different mix.
Compare the lack of clapping at the end of the official tracks to these
versions - the audience noise is mixed very low.
Note: Muddy Banks claims the Astoria concert was on 5th December 1989 in
contrast to Dean and the bootleg CD. I have yet to confirm which source is
correct.

Drain You (Come As You Are B-Side) sounds like the same mix.
School (Come As You Are B-Side) sounds different - listen to the drums
through the opening intro that are not as loud on the bootleg mix.
Been A Son (Lithium B-Side) has a little intro that is not on my copy of the
bootleg and lasts slightly longer into the fade-out than my copy but that
just might be because my tape runs out there. The mix sounds the same.
Negative Creep (Muddy Banks) has a little intro that is not on my copy of the
bootleg and the mix sounds different but that could just be because of the
dodgy quality.

* Closing Time (Outcesticide II) 2:38
[Kurt & Courtney, The Rio Tape] [date unknown]
a.k.a. It's Closing Soon / Drunk In Rio
I'm going to guess that the date is January 1993 because in the liner notes for My Body, The
Hand Grenade, the compilation of Hole rarities, it states that Miss World (early demo version)
was recorded by Craig Montgomery at Ariola Ltda BMG, Rio de Janeiro, January 1993. This adds
fuel to the rumour that Kurt wrote most of Hole's Live Through This album, when coupled with
Dave's claim that Kurt wrote Old Age, a Live Through This out-take and a B-side on their
Violet single.
