Donovan's Back Catalogue


The easiest way to get a lot of Donovan's music nowadays is on CD. For certain items though, you will have to locate the original vinyl or settle for a taped copy from a friend. Stores in your area will probably not stock every title you want and so you may have to order specific discs. This is a list of Donovan CDs, tapes, vinyl and songbooks that were at one time in the past decade or so, available to order in the U.K. There are some import titles in there too. However, the majority of these titles you cannot get anymore. This is not too much of a problem because most of the CD's are endless rehashes of either a selection of his Pye material, Lady Of The Stars or Donovan Rising.

I've included catalogue numbers, prices and a link to the disc's track listing in the discography so you can see what's actually on the disc before you buy. For the deleted discs, you cannot order them `new' and so will have to track them down either second hand or maybe first hand, lying in a bargain bin somewhere.

I want to point out that this list is intended purely as a guide to what's currently available. You don't have to buy your Donovan from a massive chain store - support your local little record shop too! Another resource is the web. Here are some links to web sites that often feature Donovan items:

For non-UK buyers: presumably in your territory you will have your own list of what's available with some, if not all of these titles on import for you. They shouldn't be too difficult to get, although I know Americans have had trouble finding Mellow Yellow which is now only available as a single disc from France. So, where do you start? Well, for the new casual Donovan fan, I would suggest getting the following discs ...

... and for the greatest hits selections, definitely get Summer Day Reflection Songs because it contains virtually everything Donovan released in 1965 ... This is by no means the ultimate Donovan starting collection. Many of the discs need to be re-issued with full digital remastering and bonus tracks, but if you want to hear the music today then you've no other choice.

I haven't decided which of the currently available CD's of Lady Of The Stars or Donovan Rising are the best so I'll leave that up to you. If you can find Originals, a 4-CD box set with the Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow, Hurdy Gurdy Man and Barabajagal albums with a fold out essay and poster then don't bother getting the respective single discs. This was a bit of a must buy for fans, although it is now unavailable.


The following information is derived from artist searches conducted at the HMV store in Leeds on 18th July 1995, 18th September 1995, November/December 1998 and during September 1999. Their database does not use a preceeding `The' in their titles and sometimes misses words out. I have added information to the listing in italics which does not appear in their database. The albums Banzani and World Power are by the reggae artist Donovan, not our Donovan which is why they are not included here.
