The front cover is a dark black and white photo of Donovan taken by Jack Pia. He's not looking
at the camera and it's quite a strange choice for an album cover. The title and a few lines from
Sunny Goodge Street are arranged in a column on the left hand side. Apparently, some
copies of the original LP have a blank rear sleeve, but I haven't seen one to confirm this.
Turning to the back, we see that the front is a cropped version of a larger photograph. There's
a wider version on the back cover, with a few random groovers hangin' around. A (sub?)title,
`Songs For Sunshine People' precedes the track listing of the album. The item of most interest
is a reference to Shawn Phillips playing electric guitar on a tune called Song With Your
Name that is not on the album. Presumably an out-take from the sessions that didn't make it
to the final track selection. As far as I am aware, no-one has heard this song.
The U.S. release is the same as the U.K. release with Universal Soldier and
Colours substitued for Colours and Oh Deed I Do respectively. I can see that
Hickory would want Universal Soldier on the record because they had released it as a
single in the U.S. As for deleting Oh Deed I Do ?! There is enough space on the record.
If they wanted to get rid of a song, why not Candy Man with its obvious drug references?
Thus, collectors regard the U.K. issue as the definitive.
The first CD re-issue has a page of
background notes
by Lorne Murdoch. Annoying little mis-spellings haunt the release eg. Belated Foregiveness
Plea on the actual CD, Bert Janosh, Shawn Philips on the back of the case.
The second CD re-issue is better, but they regard the EP version of Ballad Of A
Crystal Man simply to be an edit of the album version, whereas it is a different
take altogether. Healthy selection of bonus tracks, although I'm told the supposed
single version of Colours on the CD is in fact, the album version.
To Try For The Sun is listed as I'll Try For The Sun on the original label. Since
it is copyrighted as To Try For The Sun and Donovan himself refers to the song like that,
I conclude that To Try For The Sun is the correct name of the song.
Notes (pertaining to the shaded grey and 80's re-issue unless stated):
- The shaded grey re-issue lists the title as Fairy Tale on the spine, whereas the 80's
re-issue lists it as Fairytale. I favour the latter.
- On the shaded grey re-issue, Oh Deed I Do is listed as being published by `Southern
Music Pub.' on the label, but the Castle CD re-issue says `Pied Piper'. Which is right? Also,
To Try For The Sun, Summer Day Reflection Song, Jersey Thursday, Ballad Of A
Crystal Man and Belated Forgiveness Plea are published by `Donovan (Music) Ltd.'
according to the label, whereas ASCAP says `Southern Music Publ Co Inc'. This issue can be
distinguished by a `STEREO' title in the top left hand corner of the front cover.
- On the 80's re-issue, there is a fake stamp mark that says: `Originally released in 1965 as
Pye NSPL 18128.' I don't know of a fake stereo version of the original album. Is there one? They
have also removed the Pye Records logo from the top left hand corner, even though the re-issue is
on Pye. Also, I have two versions of the this re-release. One is on Pye Records and has a shaded
mauve label. The other is on PRT (Precision Records And Tapes Ltd.) and has a fir green label
with a red swirly blob in the middle. The only difference between the two releases (including the
covers) is the label backgrounds colours, the logos and licensing information.
- Circus Of Sour is credited to `Paul' on the record label. The newest releases credit
it to Paul Bernath. In ASCAP's files the song is credited to Donovan. Which is right?
- Summer Day Reflection Song is listed as The Summer Day Reflection Song on the
record label.
- Ballad Of A Crystal Man is listed as The Ballad Of A Crystal Man on the record
label.
- Ballad Of Geraldine is listed as The Ballad Of Geraldine on the record label.
