10th May 1946

Donovan is born in Maryhill, Glasgow.

Despite stating in the liner notes to his first U.S. LP, Catch The Wind that he was born on 10th February 1946, Donovan is a May baby. This leads suspicious minds to believe that these `self-penned' notes were actually written by his managers, albeit in a Donovan style.

Melody Maker runs a front page article with the headline "Pop Protest Songs Soar" and Donovan's Universal Soldier is cited as an important example.

The Four Tops play London's Saville Theatre and afterwards Donovan attends a party. Reported by Tony Hall - the MC of the show and a Record Mirror writer.

"To celebrate, Brian Epstein threw a small party at his house in Belgravia. A nice party. With nice people. Like George [Harrison] and Patti [Boyd], John and Cyn[thia Lennon], Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Donovan, Georgie Fame, Chris Curtis, Vicki Wickham, Eric Burdon, Hilton Valentine...people like that."

Donovan watches The Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Bag O'Nails, London W1.

"The Experience's two shows at the Bag O'Nails take place in front of their most prestigious audience to date. A galaxy of London scenesters attend, including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bill Wyman, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, Eric Clapton, Lulu, Donovan, Eric Burdon, Georgie Fame, Geno Washington, Denny Laine and many more."

9th November 1967

"'Rolling Stone' magazine is launched in San Francisco. It includes a free "roach clip" for dope-smokers."

Notable because Donovan was featured in the first issue. I think this same article was reproduced in a book called Rock 'N' Roll Giants, or something similarly daft. There was definitely a b&w photo of Donovan. The interviewer and Donovan were chatting about how the freak is not the freak - it's the straight who's really the freak. I wish I'd photocopied the article before my local library decided to throw it away!

16th August 1968

Donovan Leitch Jr. is born in London.

October 1971

"John Phillips is reported to be producing Donovan's new album for Warner Brothers in Hollywood."

I don't know what happened to this! I doubt if anything was recorded. They would have made an interesting team, though.
